You Zig, I'll Zag

PictureSinger Zigzag attachments
Just this week I had a rare opportunity to compare three Singer zigzag attachments at the same time.

Singer introduced zigzaggers early in the 20th century.  Over the next few decades the concept progressed from no-frills to fancy.

Let's take a closer look at three examples:

Singer Adjustable Zigzag Attachment # 121706

No-frills model with instruction manual dated 1939.  For low-shank vertical needle machines only.

Singer Zigzag Attachment # 160620

Compact zigzagger with black & white jacket.  Instruction manual dated 1950.  Available in low-shank or slant-needle models.

Singer Automatic Zigzagger #161158

Advanced zizagger with interchangeable pattern discs.  Available in low-shank and slant-needle models.

It was a real privileage to line these three examples up and marvel at the ingenuity of the inventors who made it possible for a straight-stitch machine to sew a zigzag stitch.

So if you're looking to increase the creative potential of your straight-stitch machine, keep your eye out for one of these marvelous inventions!

Happy Sewing!

Hi, I know it's far past your post date but I just happened on your comment. I just bought a vintage Singer machine which has the zig zag attachment complete with manual. If you are still looking for one I could make you a scan of mine.

I have same zigzagger 160620 and no instructions. Could you send to me, too?

Thank you, Frances, for the copy of instructions for zigzagger.

That's great that you got to try these zigzaggers out in a side by side comparison! Maybe you could share with us what your experience was like. What are your thoughts on each? Do you have a preference between the three?

I have three zigzaggers with the round, removeable red-top templates. I have only tried one of my slant shank units on a Singer 301. It did not seem to work correctly. Do the units fail at times?

You could check eBay's sold listings for comparison prices of what other 301-A models have gone for. It's where I purchased my Singer and might be your best bet as a seller too.

I just got a 121706 adjustable zigzag attachment without a manual. Would appreciate if you could send a manual. There is a smaller piece included and I am trying to figure out what it is for.
Thank you!

The extra piece likely is the optional edge guide that installs at frontof zugzagger attachment. I have that zigzagger. Someone was kind enough to mail photo copies of instructions to me. I don't have a scanner at this time but I could go to library if they have reopened from Covid 19 restrictions and scan a black/white copy and send to you via email.
